I'm ready to declare my top albums for 2025. It was a good year for music, if for absolutely nothing else, so I'm going 15 deep. Usual caveat for being just albums I personally bought & listened to.
1. Weakened Friends, Feels Like Hell (Don Giovanni)
2. Public Enemy, Black Sky Over the Projects: Apartment 2025 (Enemy/Flavor Flav)
3. Damon Locks, List of Demands (International Anthem)
4. Car Seat Headrest, The Scholars (Matador)
5. Peter Peter Hughes, Half-Staff Blues (self-released)
(1/3)
I made a ridiculous thing: a 78-song βTarotβ #playlist. Just shuffle and listen to receive your βreadingβ. The correspondences between songs and cards may not be immediately obvious, but I put a preposterous amount of thought into them. "It was not an act of treason, nor possibly even of defiance. But it was a calculated withdrawal, from the life of the Republic, from its machinery. Whatever else was being denied them out of hate, indifference to the power of their vote, loopholes, simple ignorance, this withdrawal was their own, unpublicized, private."

#PerfectSong alert: Bad Moves, New Year's Reprieve. I liked this a lot when it came out in December 2023, but the <gestures broadly> of the past 2 years has only made it feel more relevant.
"For the sum of the living and the inevitable dimming
It wonβt kill you and it wonβt make you stronger
And youβll never get younger
But the days will get longer."

Itβs a #PerfectSong alert!
Fine Young Cannibals, βGood Thingβ (1989)

My daughter challenged me to make a playlist of "angry cowboy songs". With my typical disregard for genre boundaries, I have produced: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/26nZMgwOA3lhdzoiF4vHHQ?si=WibjLHGjQU6IXDO-rvsaKQ
