I tried it out with one handkerchief, and once I was happy with the size, I chain-sewed the rest. I didn't bother pressing the seams or trimming the extra fabric - it simply wasn't necessary for the final look of this project.

I looked up some online instructions for how to sew the bags shut. The first suggestion was to use premade drawstring sachets. Not what I had in mind, since I didn't want to spend money. I found this site with the excellent idea of tying them shut. Faster than sewing, and with the added benefit of reusability. When the lavender loses its scent with age, I can simply refill them.

I didn't feel like hemming the opening of 32 tiny fabric bags. But I had some already hemmed handkerchiefs. Used once, and disappointing because the edges got really wrinkled after a first wash. I'm not willing to use something that has to be ironed between each wash. But I am willing to iron something once for a project.

Some handkerchiefs, red, blue, and brown, with a beige checkered pattern. The edges are super wrinkly. If you folded these to put in your pocket, they would be super bulky because of the wrinkles. The same handkerchiefs, now nicely pressed flat.

Paper birch

Animal tracks

Snow with tracks of a small animal with a tail. Pairs of deeper impressions, with curved thin lines from the tail. Tracks of an animal that walks with its rear paws almost directly in the prints of the front paws, but not quite exactly, so there's a single print that appears to have seven toes where there was overlap. My boot is there for scale, women's size 10, and the double paw print is about as wide as my foot and about half as long. A trail of tiny animal prints, shallow pairs of impressions in the snow. It looks like it hopped along and under a couple of snow covered logs.

I had a beautiful walk on the mountain! Next time I'll take my crampons lol but for today I stuck to a more flat trail.

Outside the fence of the neighbor who inspired me to plant coralberry plants. They have a big established bush with bright pink berries. And around the corner they have this apparent hybrid volunteer that looks like a cross between Coralberry and snowberry. It's so subtle. I planted my coralberry and snowberry plants next to each other, so with any luck, maybe I'll eventually get something like this too.
