Hi Ottawa.Place, I thought I'd settle in with an #introduction post.
1. I started on Mastodon on one of the bigger instances a few weeks ago but have been looking for a more local one where the local tab would be more useful. I still look at the birdplace, but less and less.
2. I've lived in Ottawa for pretty much my entire adult life (with a couple brief detours to Kingston and Glasgow) and am currently in Bay Ward.
3. My main social media interests are #OttBike, #OttPoli, and other things out and about around town. Typically, I prefer active transportation options and try to #OttRun and #OttSki along the Ottawa River pathways as much as possible (with a soft spot for the less popular south side of the Parkway pathways).
4. On the #OttBike front, my current go-to is a black analogue Yuba longtail to haul my three littles and their sundry supplies around (see my profile picture), and a green Marin hybrid for the rare 'just me' rides, plus a mostly unused at the moment silver Surly Long Haul from pre-kids day trips up to Wakefield that is itching to get out again soon. I started winter biking in 2018 after waiting an hour for an "every 10 minute" bus and realized studded tires were cheaper than a monthly bus pass.
5. I have other, less posted about, interests in interdisciplinary research, with an academic background in history and geography (my last big project was on historical geographies of colonial science in Canada). I crowd sourced a non-fiction reading list after the municipal election, which you can find in my bio and can order most from the library via that list. I'm currently on my third book since October 24, with another three already on deck.
6. I try to avoid posting about work (my job isn't public facing, that's what commsfolk are for).
