I'm told I need pinned posts on my profile.

I'm a

George seems to like relaxing by the "fire". I know it's a coincidence, but it sure seems like a deliberate choice sometimes.

You know what I love most about #CUPS?

The fact that it will just spontaneously break from time to time, without any changes being made, and requiring much jiggery-pokery, cursing, repeatedly deleting and recreating printer entries, cursing some more, sacrificing a black goat at midnight under a full moon, etc before it will work again.

Literally just happened to me, again, between 2 print jobs, less than a minute apart. Changed absolutely nothing, but the second one failed and the printer (in CUPS, not the actual printer itself) went into an unrecoverable state.

Ten-second movie review... (spoiler-free)

"Thunderbolts" (2025) [1]

Believe it or not, this is a
#Marvel movie that is actually, really, truly about people, and it succeeds on that basis. By far the best Marvel film in years, perhaps ever. See it; it's great. Fantastic cast, too. [2]

However, the post-credits scene sets up what looks like a return-to-form cliche CGI-fest that will be utterly unwatchable
#drivel, like most Marvel films.

[1] No, I'm not appending the punctuation mark used in promotional materials etc. It's not part of the name, it's not pronounced, therefore it's advertising copy, and I'm not being paid to publish it, so out it goes along with the rest of the vanity typography some
#marketroid came up with.

[2] Spot the in-joke about David Harbour's character.

reheatery (n.)

a restaurant, usually a franchise of a large corporate chain, which does not
prepare food from raw ingredients, but instead merely finishes dishes pre-prepared
and shipped from a central factory. Mostly used pejoratively.

So Donald Trump, deluded in his unshakable conviction that he is the world's greatest dealmaker and peacemaker, still thinks it's okay for him to negotiate with Putin the butcher about ending the Russian war on Ukraine without #Zelenskyy as part of the talks - including negotiating giving away the sovereign territory of Ukraine.

(Donnie, how would you like it if I, a Canadian, negotiated with Mexico and agreed to give Mexico Florida, including your
#TackyWorld theme park / McMansion, without even letting you take part in the discussion?)

I'm going to propose my own peace deal to end the Russian
#assault on the innocent victim #Ukraine:

1. Russia withdraws to its properly recognized borders as of 2013, pre-Crimean-invasion.

2. Russia demilitarizes everything within 1000km of its western borders, and agrees to international observers/inspectors to audit compliance.

3. A duty or tax on all Russian oil and gas sales to pay for complete rebuilding of Ukraine.

4. Most importantly, the heads of both Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump on pikes in the middle of Kyiv, in Independence Square.

That sounds fairer to me than anything Mr. I-Bankrupted-Three-Casinos has proposed.

Random Wikipedia #criticism (rant?)...

One of the things that bugs me about (English)
#Wikipedia is how aspects of it are controlled by, for lack of a better word, #pedants, without consideration of the actual #readers - without considering the purpose of an encyclopedia.

One example of this is how, when an article features aspects of another language or dialect - for instance, something from Old English, or Arabic - where the reader will not be familiar with how to pronounce something presented transliterated to a modern Latin/English alphabet, or with a word shown in a non-Latin script entirely.

It used to be common in reference works to give a simple
#pronunciation key that was at least close to the correct pronunciation, but was easily understood by a normal literate reader. You know; the stuff that looked like "ED-joo-KAY-shun" or "SHEH-joo-ull" or whatever.

Well, that's not good enough for Wikipedia most of the time. Instead, they give the pronunciation in International
#Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), so you get stuff like "æɪ" and "aʊ" and "/ɔː/".

These are absolutely more
#accurate guides to how a word should sound. And they are absolutely, completely #useless and #uninformative to 99% of people reading the article.

You know who already knows and is completely comfortable reading
#IPA?

#Linguists. Students of language.

You know, the people who
already know how to #pronounce the words. The people who don't actually need it.

#FFS.

Guess who's about to discover that #microprocessors (and other chips, of course) are in ... well, virtually everything these days?

https://www.cnn.com/2025/08/06/tech/apple-investment-us-trump

100% tariff on imported chips will double manufacturers' costs for what is the most expensive component of many products. Cars have dozens-to-hundreds of MCUs in them now, and effectively none of them are made in the USA.

Where's that Trump-pissing-into-a-fan meme when you need it...
