New server, new #introduction -- I'm still the same old calcifer or cal from hackers.town, but the castle has been rebuilt

Old nerd with a passion for resiliency and software/hardware in constrained environments (like
#arduino, #esp32, and similar embedded systems). Also #queer, #polyamorous, and #autistic #dad

No patience for authoritarians, bigots, or bootlickers. Rights are for all people.

@Athena@chaosfem.tw I do see those extremes, but I also see a lot of stuff in the middle, so I don’t think those are the only choices.

Like, my kids never have to tinker with Ubuntu. Firefox starts up with no issues 99% of the time. LibreOffice Just Works for school work. But you can still open the hood and tinker if that’s your bag. Lots of things are actually like this! And that’s amazing!

@Athena@chaosfem.tw I think where people get caught up a bit is one of two places:

(1) picking something that requires tinkering (intentionally or not), and getting frustrated at how much that involves

(2) choosing to tinker with something and finding out that can of worms is much bigger than you expected

Like my father in law decided his first Linux should be Arch, which even for an IT person was a bit More than what he expected!

So for the record, from a veteran programmer and systems engineer: it’s ok to not understand everything you use. That’s the point of specialization, and it’s a good thing.

I also think that it’s good to be a little curious about how things work, and that people benefit by having at least a β€œbuilding blocks” level understanding of their tools and infrastructure. But it’s not required and you’re not lazy or lesser for choosing where you apply that. It’s ok to want some of your tools to Just Work.

The hilarious thing about dudes like this is that they’re absolutely using technology they don’t understand as well but somehow they’re above their own criticism, often because they think they understand things they absolutely do not.

In other words, You want the convenience of technology without the responsibility of learning how it works, and you feel the need to criticize people's who suggest that you do learn. You're not alone. in fact, that is the norm, and it's why the tech bro sociopaths have more money and power than God. So thanks for that.

Please get a drafting table.

Holy shit am I tired of the "vinyl is objectively superior because it's analog" bullshit. Look, I adore my record collection and I'm nostalgic as fuck for the unique sound a turntable with a vinyl record and a tube amplifier create.

But there's
so much error at nearly every stage of the production and playing of a vinyl record that any claim of objective superiority is just stupid.

You can prefer things without making stupid superiority claims, FFS.

I heard there were cool #moth stickers/art at #defcon33, but I haven’t seen any photos. Anyone want to point me to one or share one? My kids are interested too.

Tried a new coffee shop. Was good all around but not like exciting. Then someone was a dick to one of the cashiers and the way the place handled it has made me a fan.

manager saw and intervened, tried to deescalate but did not capitulate; guy flew off the handle, manager politely asked him to leave 1/3
