Savile's sex abuse
Sir, I am a solicitor and represented many of the late Jimmy Savile's victims in their fight for belated justice after his death. Savile was an opportunist who took advantage of the myriad opportunities afforded him by the BBC and the NHS (among others) to sexually abuse children and young people. I doubt that any online legislation would interfere with the criminal activities of a latter-day Savile. The safeguarding minister, Jess Phillips, should know that, and it is disturbing that she and her colleagues in parliament should see fit to play the Savile name to try to score points over political opponents ("I defy you to say what this has to do with free speech", comment, Aug 4).
The unmasking of Savile's sexual offending was in many ways a watershed moment in our national life, with great advances being made since in the safeguarding of children and vulnerable people, but the recent utterances of government ministers indicates that they have much to learn, and need to do so quickly because the risks remain.
