Re: Last boost about reply culture: I respect OP's stance but I am here to tell you that non-mutuals here absolutely should fear replying to me, because it cuts down on the number of trash takes I have to see. I'd prefer reply-gating instead but if you looove the "anyone on fedi is entitled to respond to anybody else" mentality, be aware that the only thing you're entitled to here is my metaphorical fist going through your proverbial teeth as your ass flies through and out the door-analogue.
idk idk, imo if you follow someone there's a good chance you want to know more about their life, experiences, etc. And I do think that learning about peoples' lives on their terms instead of yours leads to better and deeper understanding. But everyone is different. I'm not against the idea of using content notes, but the lack of quote boosts means you have to either link the post, which kills engagement on it and might break threads, or actively steal the post, which feels shitty.
Also as a warning, sometimes I specifically boost one post from a thread instead of the whole thread because the rest of it may contain content I don't want to boost without CWs, the way views and threads get broken here means I again can't warn about this in any way that will consistently help the people who need them bc "re next boost CW" doesn't necessarily get seen in order. I can unboost if it bothers you but idk what to do outside of that other than just steal content, which also isn't ok.
To clarify, I always checked new follows anyway to boot obvious bigots, spammers, and trolls. However, sometimes they would slip through the cracks. On this pass, most removals/blocks were genocide deniers/"blue no matter who" types (lotta overlap there) who had followed me before 7 Oct and hadn't been displaying those views at that volume at that point. I also removed some "claim to mean well, do not have the range to engage, absolutely will engage to aggro people they say they support" types.
You don't have to be completely knowledgeable about everything to follow me (I'm certainly not), but I have to at least try to trust you won't make things worse for the people you say you want to learn from when you talk to them. Anyway, tracking follows here sucks but if you see someone who follows me (or who I follow) being obnoxious to someone in the name of "I will be an asshole until/while you teach me about racism/transphobia/misogyny/colonialism/etc ad nauseam," feel free to let me know.
So I click on a link to a "positive news" newsletter and the first thing I see is them boasting about moving from Ghost TO Substack?!?!?! I canNOT, what the FUCK. like. wtaf.
I really do want to balance the doomscrolling with seeing/boosting positive things. But this is just more white liberal comfortwashing. They brag about how much good they do by donating 30% of their revenue and say the Nazi newsletter site will give them more money to put towards "doing good," when if they'd encouraged people to donate themselves, it'd probably have done more good (mind you Ghost is CHEAPER than Substack IIRC)

eeehhhβ¦you know what, I'm fine keeping mine on actually
There's more than one reason to wear a mask π
(also, this air quality stuff may not be directly caused by LLM usage, but LLMs accelerate climate change causing hotter, drier weather contributes to droughts, which extend and exacerbate fire seasons, and wildfire smoke is one of the things that lowers air quality, soβ¦)
I don't know why everyone is so surprised Pikachu about the defcon thing but I think it's bc I always assumed that convention was about government/military/"defense contracting" uses of hacking already due to the name and it wasn't until I saw all this umbrage that I thought "or I guessβ¦maybe it wasn't named after that??"
If, like me, you love seeing all the good Rudy Fraser is doing and the joy bubbling from the launch of the BlackSky PDS and, as another non-Black person, want to support it, you can share or subscribe to contribute to the project here!
Do NOT reply if you're going to be an anti-Black racist or a weirdo about the existence of ATProto! I do not care about your opinions and they are not relevant! Mute/block this and keep scrolling!
Earlier this year, y'all helped Sayyer stay housed, you're amazing! Now they're facing some urgent medical needs both for themself and their cat, on top of trying to pay some past due bills and rent.

Personally I don't mind if people I follow post about politics that don't affect me personally, it's good for me to know more about different places and I want to know what affects my friends'/acquaintances' lives. I suppose this is another culture shift between people who came from other social media and people who apparently want their feed to be a neat long series of content warnings. Ironically, quote boosts would make adding CWs to boosts much more viable and accessible. But anyway.
