In June, we proposed new Terms of Service for registered users of on our mastodon.social and mastodon.online servers. We did not do enough to consider the full impact of the terms, and the community was very clear that we needed to reconsider.
We've done that over the past few months. Today, we're posting an alternative set of terms, along with an opportunity for the community to provide feedback.

We appreciate that certain politicians have recently admitted their naivete in entrusting the voices of their governments to corporate / for-profit social media.
To these politicians, we say: https://joinmastodon.org/hosting
Weβre taking another step in building a sustainable financial base as a non-profit. Today, weβre announcing new hosting and support offerings, tailored for larger organisations and public institutions. These enable organisations to own their social identities, on their own infrastructure.

This is available to people on mastodon.online and mastodon.social now! π
coming soon to other servers, when version 4.5 becomes available.
You can also find details of how to control your posts, via the animations in the blog and documentation.
Note: we've got an additional channel to send us feedback listed at the end of the blog post, if you'd like to share thoughts on this feature.
Today, weβre ready to show you the upcoming quote posts feature in more detail. Weβve put together a blog post with examples of how quote posts will work on Mastodon, ahead of early access on our own servers next week π¬
Full launch to come, in Mastodon v4.5
https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/09/introducing-quote-posts/
Weβve thought carefully about building this feature, and we hope it broadens your use of Mastodon!
However, you're in control: if you donβt want your content to be quoted, you can find the setting to prevent future quotes of your content under Settings -> Preferences -> Other (in Mastodon 4.4).
Thereβs documentation available today, along with an FAQ. If youβre a developer, draft documentation is available as well.
Quote posting will be available on mastodon.online and mastodon.social next week! We will be listening to your feedback on our new feature.

We were delighted that @andypiper@macaw.social from the Mastodon team was the featured keynote speaker on day 2 of #FrOSCon this year.
Andy spoke about the importance of the #Fediverse and of decentralisation in order to preserve digital freedom and sovereignty.

It was a big weekend for the Mastodon team at #FrOSCon in Germany.
If you're curious what we've been working on and what's coming up, as well as updates across the #Fediverse more broadly, @dave@upp2.com provided an update in his talk, "Taking a Fresh Look at the Fediverse".
Fun fact: David was also one of the founding organisers of FrOSCon!

With the launch of Ghost 6.0, every publication that runs on Ghost becomes part of the #fediverse. You can follow and comment on Platformer or 404 Media articles without leaving your Mastodon feed. This is the future of social media.
Congratulations to @johnonolan@mastodon.xyz and all the team at Ghost!
