A stuffed simian. Posts auto-delete after 2 weeks.

Avatar alt-text: The head and upper torso of a stuffed gorilla. The gorilla is seated and its body is directed slightly towards the left. The head faces the same way but the gorilla is looking directly at the viewer.

Header alt-text: A 'Show Your Stripes' graph showing temperature anomalies for London since 1850, relative to a 1961 to 2010 baseline. The lines to the left are blue and become progressively redder to the right.

One of the many things I like about Japan is the gnomic mistranslations into English of the signage.

Kyoto, Japan, 2012.

This is a reproduction of one of my earliest #FossilFriday posts on this platform (foolishly, I let them all auto-delete). It's the Missouri Leviathan. Aka the American Mastodon.

Now housed in the central hall of
#NHMLondon, this fossil was unearthed as part of a 'graveyard' of #Mastodon fossils by Albert Koch in 1840.

It's fair to say that Koch, being a showman interested in making money, took some liberties with his reconstruction of the fossilised animals he had found...

#Introduction

Hi, I'm Jonathan and I've only been using Mastodon for a few days. Like many other newbies to the platform, I started out on one of the large instances but have migrated here.

I've got an interest in
#Tech, #Science, #History, #NaturalHistory, #Palaeontolgy, #Archaeology, #Museums, #Art and politics.

I'm not the most interesting person in the world but many of the people I follow will be, so there's that at least.

By now you may have seen that the UK government is suggesting that one way to prevent drought is to delete old emails and pictures, all the while saying nothing about using AI and their own addiction to pushing it at every opportunity.

Note that this isn't the first time they've done this - the screenshot is from this press release published in June:

I disagree with everyone saying that there isn't a serious and debilitating crime wave in Washington DC.

To help out, here's where you can find it happening.

Every time I idly wonder how Smilodon or any other sabre-toothed cat could possibly open its mouth wide enough to bite into anything with such large teeth I see either my own cat - or a video of a cat - yawning and the doubt is removed.
