JdeB Mastodon Users Manual ;
after a short time out I put my ducks back in a row again.

* MY BEHAVIOUR
I mostly read my 'Home' page. That means I only read what those whom I follow 'toot'
I devotedly read the comments on my 'toots' or mentionings of my name in the 'Notifications'.
When on a quest I use the 'Explore' function, mostly on
#s and sometimes for @s.
I, almost, never switch to the 'Live feeds'. Too chaotic and rarely interesting for my taste.

* MY 'TOOTS'
1st of all I toot on a few main topics. Primarily about
#Climate or #Politics, you won't see toots about my breakfast.
On the first line you will see
#s that serve as a title or indication of the topic. Sometimes a certain combination serves to indicate a broader series of topics. There would be more topics on that combination.
I use the # to make a subject better searchable in the explore section. Others can find my toots inbetween others on the same subject.
I use the @ to give, or ask, special attention from another Mastodon user. And in reactions, of course.
I cannot say enough: I welcome any reaction on my toots ! Although I prefer them to be of the constructive, positive kind. You absolutely don't have to agree with me, but be civil about it. But you don't have to be overly polite: I'm not made out of sugar. ###
I save my toots, and the reactions there upon, on a non-Mastodon archive for personal use. Mastodon addresses will be kept.

*BOOSTING
On Mastodon, boosting a toot serves as a promotion, republishing of that toot. It storngly suggests that you agree and want to 'spread the word'.

* FAVORITE
On Mastodon, favoring is like a compliment: This time it will only be seen by the other user.

*FOLLOW FOLLOWING
I follow, as a standard, those who follow me, that boosted or favored my toots.
And I follow users that sparkled my interest or topics
I try to send a private message, the moment a user follows me, welcoming and inviting them to comment on my toots and read my, pinned, mission statement.
It sometimes happens that I follow someone that did not.

* PRIVATE MENTIONS
I'm not a very private person, on this platform. I'm well aware of the content of my toots, and welcome any disagreement or comment in the open. I can take it.
When I do use a private mention it is out of respect for the recipient. Who can decide for themselves to boost it in the open.

* I ABHOR
Users that promote violence, racism, discrimination or degrading toots. Those will certainly be blocked and/or reported. But in the near two years on this platform that has not been necessary yet.

Mission Statement [reviwed and edited 24-12-21]
[but don't hold me to it]

After the devastating Dutch elections [β€˜23-11-22] I decided to dedicate my toots back to the original goal.
I care about a lot of issues, most global some national; but I won't be 'tooting' about them all.

First and formost I WANT to 'toot' about:
*
#ClimateSolutions
Because I trust that most people reading know about the dreadfull future of climate change, I want to spread the, possible, solutions to a problem rather than reiterate on the problem.
*
#ClimateJustice
One of those solution might be sueing the polluters or governments on human rights, violations or
#Ecoside
*
#ClimateAction
Action is by all means a solution.
*
#ClimateEmergency
*
#Climate

As said I want to focus on the global issue. I don't want to nitpick on too much principles. Like: "What's worse: eating cows or driving diesel?" Both are devastating behaviors of intitled rich people!
On the otherhand therefore I truly respect ANY effort to make a change for the better.

Most of all... I want to add instead of preach. Bring some bits of the puzzle to the table.

I'm NOT a scientist of any kind. I'm just a disabled old white guy typing on a desk reading and searching a lot.

I tend to toot 10-15 toots at 13:00* that I boost again unchanged at 20:00* the same day, but that's NOT a promise. [*=my [Amstedam] time]

I might be interested in:

But after a year or two there appear to be 4 general topics:
#Climate #Gaza / #IsraeliGenocide #USpolitics and #Ukraine

I tend to follow anyone who 'retoots' or 'favourites' my toots. Forget it, I'm vain.
If any of my 'followers' wants to opt out... this is your chance, as always.

"In The City of London Bicycles Now Outnumber Cars" [10:23 min]

Quote by Sf:
"Jul 9, 2025
Streetfilms in London was there when the news broke that latest counts show there are now MORE bikes than cars in the City of London! Yes, that is a relatively small section of the entire city, but it is significant. Everywhere you go in London you see people on bikes, and every visit I return I can't believe how many more bike riders there are.
Essentially, the city is really becoming a cycling mecca. But the story of the amazingly wide separated bike lanes (previously called cycle superhighways) is not the only story why biking is so good there. Low Traffic Neighborhoods are being installed all over London and once you eliminate all the thru traffic (they call that rat running) you'll find the streets so calm, so peaceful and less polluted with sound and pollution, that you don't need lanes everywhere to have a great cycle network!"

Update: On 11 July 2025, the Supreme Court of Galicia ruled in favour of the As Conchas campaigners - that pollution from industrial livestock farms violates the fundamental right to living in a healthy environment for tens of thousands of residents in the Spanish region of Galicia. The court ordered the regional authorities to enforce environmental controls and clean up the water systems, after they failed for decades to reign in excrement discharges from the megafarms that have seriously contaminated the local reservoir, river and groundwater.
The landmark decision that cites the Spanish Constitution and European human rights law could set a precedent for other campaigns against industrial agriculture pollution in other part of Europe."

Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world β€” and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. ---> Banning problematic plastics may save the world up to $8 trillion by 2040 <- [3:45 min]
---> youtube.com/watch?v=cptgtPG1Md0 <-

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/y0WAK1KGbqI

Quote by D2E, the short version:
"Jul 18, 2025
A new global study shows that banning problematic plastic products could result in economic savings ranging from $4.7 to $8 trillion between 2025 and 2040, with certain limitations and restrictions. The research, conducted by Earth Action focuses on plastics that are most likely to end up polluting the environment like expanded polystyrene packaging, PVC, single-use straws and cotton buds.
The study finds that an immediate global ban would be more effective and more economical in the long term than slowly phasing them out. WWF defines problematic plastics as β€œthose with a high likelihood of ending up in the environment and potentially harmful impacts on the environment and human health.” There are short-term transition costs, but the long-term savings far outweigh them. These would come from lower waste management costs, fewer greenhouse gas emissions, mismanaged waste and other associated social and environmental impacts.
Currently, the world produces about 430 million tonnes of plastic every year. Of this, 280 million tonnes becomes waste, and 22 percent is mismanaged, meaning it ends up in the environment instead of being properly disposed of.
If countries take action, global plastic use could drop by up to 224 million tonnes, and mismanaged waste could fall by as much as 74 million tonnes by 2040. The faster the action, the greater the benefits.
Hanna Dijkstra, environmental consultant at Earth Action, explains how the estimates were built. β€œWe modelled different policy scenarios to forecast how much plastic would be produced and consumed under each,” she says. β€œThen we built cost models to reflect the financial impact of each scenario - including public, private, and social costs.”
Under the business-as-usual scenario (where the plastic production continues along current trends), the global cost of plastic production and use would be around $10 trillion by 2040. But an immediate ban would bring that down to $2 trillion, saving $8 trillion overall.
A slower phase-out would save $7 trillion, while staggered action by richer and poorer countries would save $4.7 trillion - the least effective of the three.
An immediate ban would come with the highest administrative cost at $323 million, but it would also reduce waste management expenses by $50 billion, making it well worth the effort.
Businesses may face transition costs of around $143 million, and a drop in plastic market value of $228 billion. But the study notes that these figures don’t account for the new opportunities in reusable products, circular systems, and sustainable alternatives.
In fact, the private sector stands to gain more than it loses, as new markets emerge. Banning problematic plastics is not just good for the planet - it makes strong economic sense too."
