The Oatmeal explains the problem w/social media

The Oatmeal circa 2017 saying what we all understood but couldn't quite explain. Is it any better now? Not really. We still use social media as the main intermediary for artists and others. Facebook/Instagram still use private algorithms that determine whether or not you're allowed to reach your audience. And social media users often find that their posts are hidden based on what the corporation deems appropriate.

Cartoonist Matthew Inman illustrates how Facebook captured artists, lured them to social media, only to then act as the main intermediary for them, often throttling viewership based on secretive algorithms.
