I am a data scientist, researcher, engineer, sometime-traveler, and African SFF author. I lead software- and systems development in open data and open science, with a focus on ethics and curation. I am fascinated by the frontiers of human progress: innovation vs ignorance; wealth vs poverty, migration vs stasis. I also drink a great deal of coffee.

I do not believe progress is inevitable. That there is some ever-perfectible future we are all heading inexorably towards.
Instead, βlife is just one damned thing after another.β There is no inevitability about anything. The question of how we should respond to ethno-fascism is no different to the question of how an agnostic should respond to questions of ethics.

@Gargron@mastodon.social@scottjenson@social.coop and would she count as Scott's "technical"? Largely people buy a computer, turn it on and use whatever OS is there, but Linux is a choice which starts with even picking the distro. Using it once it's installed? Sure, no problem. My mom can do it too. But I set it up.
@Gargron@mastodon.social@scottjenson@social.coop and to go deeper on the challenge (having done tech support), I don't think the average person could install Windows or Android from scratch if it didn't come pre-installed. I'm not sure what the equivalent of "pre-installed" would look like for Mastodon?
