We've had this house plant for a few months now, and I hadn't realised it flowered until this friendly bloom popped up out of nowhere last week. Meet Alsobia dianthiflora (aka Lace Flower).

A single white flower with mauve dots along each petal. The edge of the flower is cut so that there are dozens of finger-like protrusions reaching out. It looks a bit like a sea anemone waving its tentacles in the passing current. There are leaves in the background, and the plant sits in a wicker basket, the rim of which we can see just below and behind the flower.

A totally normal pose for a Greyhound... Sugar loves being upside-down, but using the sofa to keep just her back legs in the air while she twists her front half to lie flat is nearly as good. She's an accomplished relaxer.

A black and white Greyhound lies seemingly flat on her side, except we can see her back legs are twisted upward and held aloft by leaning them against a grey sofa in the background. Shot from close to the floor, we can see a toy lion (actually a door stop) next to her, with her chin and the lion's foot almost touching. Sugar's eyes are half-closed and she's looking very relaxed.

A Sacred Kingfisher (Kōtare) down by the estuary the other day

A smallish bird with sharp, wide beak, blue head and tail, white neck and dark grey wings. It is facing away, its head turned to the side so we can see its face. It is perching on a thin dead stick that sticks out from a larger dead branch, with a blurry background
