π¨π¦ Bat friends of the Fedi! Help me help the sky puppies plz!
Are you in the US (and some parts of Canada) and occasionally available to drive an injured bat from the person who found it to the local rehabber who can help it? Especially if you are in central Florida where I am, please reach out to me here, or via Signal!
We constantly get calls for bat help from folx who are just a little too far away for me to get to myself, and the finder isnβt always in a position to drive themselves. Volunteer transporters often make the lifesaving difference for our bats in need. We even set up relays where the trip can be broken up if you canβt drive the full distance. And Bat World Sanctuary reimburses fuel mileage!!!
Please donβt hesitate to ask questions if youβre curious, Iβm happy to go into special interest mode, LOL.
This is a no-contact situation; you pick up a bat thatβs already in a box and drive it to the rehabber who contacted you. Itβs super low pressure. If youβre not available they just go to the next volunteer on the list. No biggie.
Yβall. My heart (and belly) is so full at the end of these two weeks at the John C. Campbell Folk School. I canβt tell you how lucky I feel that I was able to take the time out of my βreal lifeβ to do a deep dive building new skills and honing some rusty ones. Being surrounded by folx from all kinds of backrounds who were also diving into their respective crafts and arts.
Iβm more than a little emotional about heading home in the morning!
So. Hereβs a picture of the result of all that work:

@SRLevine@neuromatch.social Mine is the OAS reaction (birch pollen related) to the Mal d 1 protein. That protein is hella heat sensitive which is why I can have cooked/baked/heat processed apples with zero issue.
The other, more serious apple allergy is to Mal d 3, an nsLTP that isnβt as nearly as thermally sensitive. I doubt this type benefits from the Olde Apples.
The phenolic link would make sense for Mal d1 type (to me at least) because i definitely have a lower reaction when an apple has been cut up for a while and started browning. And thatβs straight up polyphenol oxidation. @fbz@infosec.exchange

Just did another bat rescue transport this morning! π€π¦π€
Got a text asking if I could go pick up a little downed friend and transport it to a rehabilitator, so switched up plans and got on the road!
If you love sky puppies and want to help, itβs low pressure and super easy. I get just a few calls a year, and if Iβm not available they just go to the next person on the list. There is ZERO direct bat contact for the transporter. You donβt need any special skills, just be willing to drive a wee box from point A to point B.
(I think they even reimburse fuel, but Iβve never bothered.)
[EDIT to note this is US based.] Anyway, if you want to be on the list to help out, scroll to item 1 on the list and follow the instructions to the sign up form. https://batworld.org/volunteer/
Probably about time for a new (re) #Introductions post to pin! Been bumbling around on Mastodon since November 2017 on one server or another, and happy to get cozy in a smaller server this time.
Iβm not a heavy poster, but lean mostly towards #SciCom and pictures of the #critters and #wildlife I spot in my central Florida backyard or from adventures on my #camping trips.
Iβm currently a #caregiver, formerly a professional #Library knowledge ninja. Strong believer in the #RightToRepair and lifelong #Sewcialist. I love fixing and mending things.
My #NeuroSpicy flavour is #80HD, so it may be unsurprising that my academic studies and interests are hella broad. I spend a lot of time digging into local ecology and #HabitatRestoration and preservation. Iβm a #space and aeronautics nerd, but I'm also a #Polyglot with an academic background in #linguistics, adult literacy, and ESL. The other part of my academic background is the technical side of theatre.
