The 2025 Uproar Festival of Public Art is my favorite new outdoor-art activity - last year was fantastic, and this year is shaping up to be just as good. 💖![]()
The art is available in Hillsborough, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro through August 22nd - @mbroome@infosec.exchange & I have been traveling a bunch, with more to come, so this week is really our main chance to see it. Last year I did a speed run in the last two days of the festival, so this year we wanted to take our time and do one afternoon per town.
This morning's rain was supposed to clear up after lunch - not so much! 🙄
(The sun came out as we were visiting the last art piece.) But it was still a lovely way to spend a rainy afternoon...

My favorite piece so far was the tiny houses... And the most moving was this fantastic interactive installation - each door opens to reveal a painting and an insight about existing and creating in this world. It's the kind of thing that could so easily come off as cheesy or preachy, but instead it felt very human and profoundly loving.
The interior was all blackboard surfaces with chalk available to add our own thoughts, hopes, and encouragements. I left a message that a stranger offered me a decade ago, when I was mourning my father at the Temple at Burning Man:
Don't lose hope. The end of the world for a caterpillar is the beginning for a butterfly.
This artist definitely has the soul of a Burner, whether or not they've actually been - I can absolutely imagine stumbling across this artwork in the deep playa, an unexpected gift.
