Brit who became German and is moving to France. Runs the #CrossBorderRail project and writes about railways and EU politics. Politically green, lives happily without a car.
Normally found stuck on a train or stuck in a village in Bourgogne, or escaping either on a folding bicycle.
Toots mostly in EN, einige auf DE, parfois en FR.

Putting together a little #CrossBorderRail conclusions tour for this autumn (between mid-September and the end of October)
Some events already confirmed (Berlin, Maastricht, Praha, Kulturzug) and some are things I am attending (Wintersdorf, Wien, BalatonfΓΌred, Paris), but if you'd like me to come and tell the stories of 3οΈβ£
8οΈβ£
8οΈβ£
borders crossed in this project in your city or at your event do let me know!
I have a few Interrail days free π
And two spare days in Bruxelles π§πͺ
to fill as well!
Ah. An unpleasant mansplainer I blocked on LinkedIn earlier (someone I didnβt know but chose to lecture me in a comment on my status) has now emailed me saying literally βblocking people is not nice!β
Hey dude. You should have thought of that before you were unpleasant π![]()
Part of all this SNCF malevolence is a central question: WHAT is a state owned company for in a capitalist system in 2025? And WHO is it for?
The idea ought to be that such a company could have a weaker profit motive than a private firm, and hence - for example - tolerate more staff at ticket offices, or more half full off peak trains
But SNCF is obviously hostile to its customers, hence WHO is it run for?
SNCF
Really
"Our trains are too full, what do we do?"
"Impose compulsory reservation to stop overcrowding, and restrict the numbers who can take them!"
"But now our tickets are so damned complex now everyone is queuing to try to buy tickets!"
"Make the ticket office compulsory reservation too!"

Hmmm, is that a #CrossBorderRail line just a few metres into France? π€![]()

If it is (was) a #CrossBorderRail it must have been here - Google Satellite view https://www.google.com/maps/@49.2166176,6.9389898,258m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDgwNi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

Riese+MΓΌller is ending sales of the Birdy folding bike, but production in Taiwan will go on under another name
Given R+M hasnβt given a damn about the Birdy for years, and wonβt even supply most spare parts for mine, Iβm not remotely surprised, and itβs probably a good call
