During my trip to Australia, I switched my devices and apps to show metric units (Celsius, km, etc). Get the whole experience, right? I don't mind since I can convert most common imperialβmetric units in my head anyway. That's except for temperature since Β°F & Β°C don't have the same zero - I often use a converter app for that. After I returned home, it took almost a week to find all those settings and change them back. π
I posted a YouTube video with narrated photos/videos from my trip to #Australia in late Jan / early Feb 2025. Thanks to friend & colleague @Leighton@avgeek.social for acting as my local guide. Among sightseeing spots: Blue Mountains, Sydney Bridge Climb, Australia Day concert & fireworks in Sydney, Australian Parliament House in Canberra, Melbourne CBD, Great Ocean Road & Naracoorte Caves. Also Portland VIC, since I live in Portland OR. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BZrHoR4Dv8 #aviation #travel #roadtrip #avgeek
I like my #avgeek views in Portland. I heard a louder-than-usual plane. It was a USAF F-16 of the Thunderbirds flight demonstration team. They're visiting Portland Air National Guard base at #KPDX for this weekend's Oregon Int'l Air Show at McMinnville #KMMV. #military #aviation
Today I got pictures... USAF Thunderbirds F-16s returning from the Oregon International Air Show in McMinnville #KMMV, turning final to Portland International Airport (and Air National Guard base) #KPDX. These views were from my home in Portland this afternoon. #military #aviation #avgeek
Planespotting from home this afternoon, I got pics of a brand new green Boeing 737 MAX8 inbound from the 737 factory in Renton #KRNT. It was on final approach to Portland Int'l #KPDX. After landing, ADS-B showed it taxied to the Boeing Portland Paint Hangar as expected. The pre-painted rudder looks like this plane's buyer is SCAT Airlines of Kazakhstan. ADS-B data agreed, showing a KZ reg. I saw another SCAT arrive May 31 & leave June 12. #UnpaintedAirplane #PicklePlane #aviation #avgeek #PNW
An unpainted green Boeing 737 MAX8 flew by today on its way to the Boeing Portland Paint Hangar. I got pictures from home as it flew by about a mile away on final approach to Portland #KPDX Runway 28L. The pre-painted rudder indicates this one may be for Arajet of the Dominican Republic. Since it flew in from Moses Lake, Washington #KMWH, it was likely coming from storage, not the factory. (Orders may change for stored planes.) #UnpaintedAirplane #PicklePlane #aviation #avgeek #PNW
"James Cameron's First Non-'Avatar' Film Since 'Titanic' Is About the Man Who Survived Both Atomic Bombs" by Military-dot-com (Fediverse presence not found #FPNF - if you know them, invite them) - Cameron interviewed the double-bomb survivor Tsutomu Yamaguchi before his death in 2009. On a business trip to Hiroshima, Yamaguchi was 2mi/3km from the blast. Returning home to Nagasaki, he was at work the same distance from the second bomb. https://www.military.com/off-duty/movies/2025/05/07/james-camerons-first-non-avatar-film-titanic-about-man-who-survived-both-atomic-bombs.html #WWII #military #nuclear #history
The article says there's no timeline yet for Cameron's movie about Tsutomu Yamaguchi's story of surviving both atomic bombs. In a case of truth being stranger than fiction, Yamaguchi described returning to work in Nagasaki. He was trying to explain to his skeptical boss that a single bomb had destroyed Hiroshima, when the Nagasaki bomb detonated 2mi/3km away. #WWII #military #nuclear #history
"Nagasaki marks 80 years since atomic bomb dropped" by ABC News USA @abc@flipboard.com - Few survivors remain now from the August 9, 1945 atomic bombing of Nagasaki. But the calls of many of them over the years are remembered, urging the world not to let a nuclear attack on a city happen again. https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/nagasaki-marks-80th-bomb-anniversary-survivors-put-hopes-124500770 #WWII #history #TDIH

"Hiroshima survivors fear rising nuclear threat on the 80th anniversary of atomic bombing" by @AssociatedPress@flipboard.com - The few remaining survivors of the Hiroshima atomic blast were children at the time. Their experiences tell a side of the story that gets missed in the science and aviation timeline. With hindsight of the effects of radioactivity, their experience shows why humanity must never allow conflict to reach that point again. https://apnews.com/article/japan-us-hiroshima-atomic-bombing-survivors-2a15654cf3689f4f4128098ffbf9a614 #WWII #history #TDIH #aviation #avgeek

80 years ago, August 6, 1945: the atomic bombing of Hiroshima was the first nuclear attack in world history. 90,000-166,000 estimated killed. Along with the Aug 9 atomic bombing of Nagasaki and Soviet Union's declaration of war on Japan, these events caused Japan to surrender, ending World War II. Many lessons learned from #history. Questions remain whether those lessons will be heeded. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki #WWII #TDIH #military #nuclear #aviation #avgeek

Takeoff on Runway 28L at Portland Airport #KPDX of a Boeing 777-200LR/F freighter fresh out of the Boeing Portland Paint Hangar. This is probably the plane's second flight. Its first flight was July 10 from the Boeing Everett factory at Paine Field #KPAE to Portland for painting. Today it flew to Boeing Field #KBFI in Seattle where the customer will complete the purchase and take delivery. #aviation #avgeek #PNW

I bicycled to Portland Airport #KPDX this afternoon. Here's the same Boeing 777-200LR/F freighter which arrived as an #UnpaintedAirplane #PicklePlane on July 10, now painted in Emirates Sky Cargo livery. Though it's still owned by Boeing at this point. The plane flew to Boeing Field #KBFI in Seattle where purchase and customer delivery are routinely the next steps. #aviation #avgeek #PNW

Spotted flying into Portland #KPDX this afternoon: a brand new green unpainted Boeing 737 MAX9 on its first flight out of the factory in Renton #KRNT. It came to the Boeing Portland Paint Hangar, which Boeing uses for overflow capacity when all the Seattle-area paint hangars (at RNT PAE BFI) are booked. The pre-painted rudder and winglets indicate this aircraft's customer is United Airlines. #UnpaintedAirplane #PicklePlane #aviation #avgeek #PNW

Viewed from my backyard, a new Boeing 737 MAX9 with pre-painted rudder indicating this one will be going to United Airlines. It came from Boeing's 737 factory in Renton WA #KRNT. This one was different because it did 2 touch-and-go's on Portland #KPDX Runway 28R before landing on Runway 28L, nearest to the Boeing paint hangar. I would have missed some pics if I had been at the airport, without enough time to reposition to the other runway. #UnpaintedAirplane #PicklePlane #aviation #avgeek #PNW
