I'm quietly contemplating why so many of my tech colleagues are on Bluesky and not on Mastodon. Not because they "Are wrong" but what are the reasons people have congregated there?

Clearly it's a one-stop-shop so sign up is CLEARLY an issue, we've known that for a while. But I think, now, given that they've got some traction, it's simply because more people are there.

Now, there is a GREAT crowd here too! I'm not too worried. Just thinking about what it would take to make them switch?

#WordPress friends!
I've got a bunch of WordPress posts and I'd like to export them into "proper documents". I'd take PDF or DOCX formats, I'd just like the images and links to survive the export process.

I can export everything as a giant XML file but most online converter choke on the size (9mb). I tried using Claude to write a script to save them as DOC files but I kept getting errors.

Who knew this would be so hard?

This is part 2 in my LLM series: The Timmy Trap. We perceive LLMs as intelligent when they aren't. Our brains have been hacked.

Hype is a business tool. Too many #UX folk don't know about the Gartner Hype cycle. Even those that do don't understand how it's being used to manipulate us, making our discussion of #genAI so complicated and scary. This is my attempt to calm things down a bit.

One of my earliest UX wins was for Mac System 7. The Finder team wanted to truncate files names with '…' if it wouldn’t fit. I argued that too much critical info would be lost and suggested it be in the middle instead. The Finder team loved it and implemented it later that day. They were so easy to work with.

I'd totally forgotten about it until I overheard someone commenting it was an example of Apple's attention to detail. I'd didn't say anything at the time but yeah, that was me ;-)

Whenever I explain my #research at Google into mobile text editing, I'm usually met with blank stares or a slightly hostile "Everyone can edit text on their phones, right? What's the problem?"

Text editing on mobile isn't ok. It's actually much worse than you think, an invisible problem no one appreciates. I wrote this post so you can understand why it's so important.

Time for my #introduction. I've been in #UXDesign for 40 years, working at Apple in the 80s, Symbian, Google, and frogdesign.

I'm convinced we're stuck in our
#UX ways, not seeing desktop, mobile, or ML for what they could be.

#OpenSource is a profoundly positive force, if we could just figure out how to work together on #UXDesign problems.

I'm semi-retired, looking for ways to push things forward as well as give back.
