Fascinating morning reads.

I stumbled on a thread about ableistic behaviour this morning, which was, let's say, not awesome. In my (unsuccessful) attempt to find the post triggering the thread, I came across a paper on moderation issues on mastodon, which is undoubtedly correct, but...
le sigh

It frames the problem as both technical and social, but it misses - as most such discourses seem to - a simple psychological root cause.

I'll explain. I keep explaining this.

People are social animals. We each have our different needs when it comes to social interaction, but the fundamentals are the same: we all need the safety of groups. And we all need privacy.

This seems like two contradictory requirements, and a lot of moderation discussions focus on balancing those two, and for good reason. The underlying commonality here are visibility and control.

I recall a time when having your site down due to the /. effect was a point of pride. People would put banners on their website (afterwards) with "I've been slashdotted!"

Somehow, "I've been cloudflared!" doesn't have
quite the same ring, eh?

But no, the problem is FachkrΓ€ftemangel (undersupply of qualified people).

Fuck you, tech industry. The landscape gardening career path looks more attractive every day.

More common red flags:

- "as part of our AI strategy"
- systemizing the problem and individualising the solution, aka "dynamic environment" or "individual ownership", aka lack of structure and processes compensated by overtime
- "competitive salary". In about 90% of the cases this translates to "below industry average"
- no remote options

I don't even get far enough to try and understand anything about the company or specific job before I hit one of those.

In COMPLETELY UNRELATED news, do not bank with Deutsche Bank.

I don't even know why that popped into my head just now.

My favourite red flag today was "move to the cloud" and "strategic partnership with Google" in conjunction with some (legal) document processing thingimajig as if those were an exciting combination of words for anyone but a litigious lawyer in 2025.

Looking at the time, I guess I am at the "browsing job offers in the middle of the night out of frustration and hating everything I see" stage of my career.

A lot of Germans are posting in German about #Giessen today, and since many of our friends overseas may be confused, here's a summary:

The current iteration of the Nazi-Party, the AfD, is holding a summit in the town of Giessen today. They announced the formation of a youth org (Hitler-Jugend?). A ton of people came to protest. The police are busy protecting the Nazis, and politicians in the current government see fit to attack the protesters.

This needs international attention.
