Some people watch the movie "Patton" and they think he's a really cool guy and not a creepy monster filled with all the bloodlust of a strange ancient god to whom you must sacrifice your children.
And so I don't really like that film for it's ambiguity on the necessity of such men. It's not cute.
When I was in middle school this girl, Cricket was always talking about her "boyfriend from Canada"
"He's named Kyle and plays hockey. We met on the postcard exchange. He sent me this valentines day card."
We made fun of her. Kyle was obviously fake.
Well. She just married Kyle.
KYLE WAS REAL ALL ALONG.
US pol: Congressional stunt idea.
If the executive branch can issue "warrants" why not the legislative branch too?
Could a member of congress draft a "Congressional Warrant" and then go into anyone's house and search for things? For example search for say... missing files?
If you don't need a judge to break down doors just paperwork with the word "warrant" at the top, it seems many things should be possible.
Snow Day!
It's a Snow Day for NYC schools!
How magical. I hope that there is enough snow that I can go to the park and make a snow fort.
Please stay warm.
Some things are harder to teach than others. One of the most difficult things to explain is "how to start sewing without putting a knot at the end of the thread."
Like many tasks that I stumble over when teaching I made the fatal mistake of thinking "this is easy"
I think I need to draw diagrams?
What makes it worse is it's not that important when you are sewing a book signature how you "knot the thread" since it will be covered in glue later.
My students want an "Official Procedure"
I think this dynamic of people learning a task wanting formal official steps leads to people thinking that there is "One Right Way" to do tasks that can be done in many ways.
A frustrated teacher formalizes something that just isn't formal to avoid having everyone bugging her over and over "but how do I start it? how do I knot it?"
Will I cause someone in 20 years to be told "That's the Wrong Way to do it."
hmmm

Illustration from "The living world: a complete natural history of the world's creatures" by J.W. Buel was first published in 1891 (I just scored a copy!)
I'm obsessed with these deep sea creatures that are based on rumors heresy and globsters from fishing nets:
I also have some choice words about the inaccuracy of the section on ants.
There. Is. No. Such. Thing. As. A. "Police Ant"
The strange thing about this engraving? It's a very accurate deception of ants performing "social carrying" I guess they gave it a silly caption to make it more interesting?
Someone was really observing ants and it was not whoever was setting the text.
(A better caption: An ant carries her sister to a new nest. She may be too young to navigate on her own without getting exhausted or lost, or she may be injured and in need of rest.)
