"Carbonated Swamp Warbler" sounds like something you drink when you visit New Orleans and then you don't remember the rest of the trip.

But, it's actually one of a handful of birds that Audubon painted but no one can seem to find it anymore.

A cryptid!

The saddest thing about this time of year is the lack of ants. :(

I have my pet colony, (carpenters) and the ants at the museum. (honeypots and leafcutters) ... but I never see any ants in the park, or on the sidewalk or trees.

It's so lonely.

Have you wondered where all the ants go?

In winter ants like my carpenters enter "diapause" which is similar to hibernation in mammals. They prepare their bodies for cold and move slowly. Deep in the earth and in the trees they rest in a big pile.

Kid on the D train with a dodecahedron puzzle cube. (Think a rubik's cube with 12 faces and 11 facets on each face.)

I'm watching him mess with it thinking he's just playing, but then I realize he's doing a solving algorithm.

That kid's going to show up after break speed-solving a megaminx and I'm frankly a little jealous.

(I was probably staring too much but if you don't want me to stare at you on the train don't wave a colorful platonic solid in me face.)

"Going to get some live bait then I'll catch that big catfish down in the river"

"Dad, that fish will pull you out of the boat. Sometimes catfish try to eat people. Saw it on youTube."

"That's not real."

"I've seen that fish once, and it wants to eat people. I'm certain. Nothing is better when you add 'cat' to the name."

"That's right! Like 'bird'"
"catbird"
"fish?"
"catfish"
"tires?"
"cattires!"
"call"
"catcall?"
"berries!"
"catberries!"
"merand..."
"now you are being simple"
"log?"

It is important, I'm told, that when caroling for cash that you present an imposing and joyful sight when the target opens their door.

You should creep on the house one by one and NOT be seen going along in a group on your way there. Then, when the target opens the door stun them: start singing
immediately do not say hello or explain.

Have some cheerful decorations to wave and try to fill the whole door frame with costumes and silly flags, ribbons and banners.

The more people? The better.

"Here We Come A-wassailing"

How do you use this song?

In which I read religious texts and get confused.

The story of Job is so weird. It has some of the best parts in the Bibleβ€” but also I am confused why Satan is back in Heaven talking to God? Didn’t that guy get kicked out? To me getting kicked out of heaven seems like a big deal β€œlet us never speak again” kind of thing. Confusing!

I guess God might care what even a fallen angel thinks? God seems very unstable.

Biology experimental design challenge:

Question: Do cats notice the orientation of the ears of other cats or animals? Can they use this as a cue to locate prey or items of interest? (eg a toy)

Cats can turn their ears to listen directionality. Their ears are very large. Could cats notice the orientation of the ears of other cats or creatures that can angle their ears and use this to locate an item of interest?

Stop saying "Jamaica is a limestone island*" @JamaicanGeologist will teach you about the nuance and deep history of this island. He's very passionate about these rocks!

(Just found a great new
#geology channel to follow.)

*I was unaware that people were saying this, but I love someone who comes in with nuance like this.
