Vibe Coding:
OK I get it, it's cool, I can see why it works. But in the infamous words of Shania Twain, that don't impress-a-me much.
I want to see you vibe maintaining a 20 year old legacy enterprise app that half the world runs on. That's what I've spent most of my career doing. I don't even slightly believe the current generation of tech is up for it.
Yes, the LLMs can help, but right now you need experienced humans for this.
OK, let's talk about AI.
I'm a software engineer. I've been programming for a little over
30 years now, and I've seen a lot of change. I'm also a leftist greenie into nature and permaculture and the climate, and I'm angry about what we're doing to the world.
In my career, I am learning about AI. I am using it. I am assessing where it's adds value and where it doesn't. I am ensuring that I am able to continue to have a career where I am able to provide for myself and those who depend on me. And people do very directly depend on me. This is the most disruptive change I've seen in my career, and it is part of my role to understand it and have the experience to guide it.
Yes, I am conflicted about this. Yes, I am well aware of the harms it is causing in the world. I am aware of what is is doing to creative industries and what it is setting up for the next generation. I do not like the world that startup tech is creating.
There are many places I do good in the world, but right now, I need to work within this system. I understand if that makes me an instant block for you. I'm pinning this here so that you can.
If you'd like to talk about the realities of all this, I am open.
Be good to each other, Aly.
