He only met his cousin James on this one occasion, but they seemed to have a good relationship and corresponded frequently by mail. The relationship was good enough that Robert hit James up for 10 pounds in 1796, when he'd joined the militia and found out the uniform he'd ordered was going to cost more than he had sitting around.

I stayed in this house on an oddly named street called Bow Butts. Stop laughing. Stop. It's not that funny.

Anyways, it was once owned by a family with the last named Burnes or Burness. They were related to Robert Burns and he came to visit them here in 1787 on his tour of the borders and highlands when he was newly famous.

Managed to shower and get breakfast this morning and then realized I don't have any energy, so I'm giving myself a few hours in bed before trying anything more. Did 18k steps yesterday and there isn't a day in the last week that I've done less than 15k, with some approaching 30k.

Going to do a bit of a random thread of stuff in my photo imports folder for the last few days while I recharge.

Here is the guild hall and old steeple church in Montrose. The church has room for several thousand people inside.

After leaving the castle, a little disappointed that you couldn't go higher up in it, I climbed a craig across the road hoping for a view of the castle. I think there is one, but you had to climb higher or take a different path. From about halfway up I got a good view of the adjoining cemetery, which I'd visited on the way to the castle, and Braemar (the town) itself.

A servants staircase was added at some point, trading a big medieval style kitchen filling the whole space of one of the ground floor barrel vaulted chamber, for a progressively more modern, but smaller one.
